Clove Oil in Dentistry
A therapeutic breath-freshener
Clove essential oil has a safety record a mile long — documented use as a breath freshener as early as the 3rd century B.C. Subjects awaiting an audience with Chinese emperors were required to chew cloves to fix bad breath, and ancient Hindu texts describe the use of clove oil in dentistry. A 1945 medical text for dentists lists the essential oils of clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, peppermint, spearmint, and wintergreen — all actively therapeutic today in Young Living products.
Avicenna, teacher of Hippocrates (the Father of Medicine), treated rotting teeth and gums with pills of clove oil. Bernard Schechter, DDS says that, since the 19th century, the germ-killing molecules in clove oil have functioned for root canal work and other more serious dentistry. The molecule named eugonol in clove essential oil particularly inhibits growth of nearly all disease-causing bacteria while leaving the beneficial bacteria unharmed.
Studies from the University of Oslo in Norway show that oral infections, especially gum disease, can cause serious problems like heart failure, pneumonia, diabetes, and low birth weight children. There are at least three possible pathways linking oral infections to life-threatening secondary effects throughout the body system:
- rapid spread of infection from the mouth as a result of swallowing bacteria through dental procedures
-
injury to other organs from the effects of these toxic microbes (anaerobic) that do not need oxygen to reproduce as do their aerobic relatives.
-
out of control inflammation caused by an overworked immune system induced by anaerobic bacteria from infected teeth.
Young Living uses clove oil in many products and, in addition, makes it available in 15ml. vials at an extremely reasonable price. A little goes a very long way, and one bottle can last months even with daily use.
But the most convenient way to use clove daily for your teeth is in Young Living oral care products for adults and children. Their THIEVES blend contains a good bit of clove oil, and is found in all products (also available separately) of the THIEVES II KIT. Everyone in the family can enjoy the individually-wrapped Thieves Lozenges, 30 to a reusable tin, that are so portable and pack such a wallop of breath-freshening protection.
NEW in May 2006, an easy-to-take anti-oxidant capsule of essential oils of clove, thyme, orange and frankincense that will be of great value to the immune system and very easy on your pocketbook.
